Back in the '70s, these shows were still on TV after school in Chicago on WGN. I think I saw every one of these episodes. Still funny — and decidedly non-PC — after all these years.

I want to assert for the record that Stymie is the man.
Also that '40s Rascals pale in comparison to the '30s generally, and that Wheezer is also the man.

When the Rascals got older, they weren't nearly as funny, nor was the writing. There are a few scenes in this mash up from the episode where all the kids bake a cake (you see Stymie icing the groaning cake throughout). My all-time favorite, non-PC moment comes from this episode. Stymie is reading the recipe, and he reads, "Mix in bowl and set on stove." So Stymies sits on the stove. Cut back to Stymie and he says, "It sho am hot in here!" Then he wipes his forehead and flings the sweat away, leaving a big black splash on the wall.

One of my favorite Stymie gags was in Free Wheelin', in which he was serving as the engine (and car radio) for a taxi Brisbane was driving.

You know how I mentioned the short "Free Wheelin'" Tuesday? Well, in that short Stymie says to his mother "We got us a automobile - I's the floating power!" (Stymie being the "engine") Turns out they were riffing on Dodge ads of the time:

I've spent the last 15 minutes trying to find this episode online, but with no luck. I'd like to catch that. I need to watch these again now that I'm older to see how many more cultural references I missed back in the day.
So, here's Miss Crabtree ( June Marlowe ). Schwing!

I don't know if the download here is legitimate, but given there are reviews and such, it should be. http://www.tv.com/shows/little-r…
This being my work computer and such. I'd say this episode is probably my all-time favorite.

I found that site, and it's really just a TV version of IMDB. There's no video on it, at least none that I can find. Hmm, I wonder if they're on Netflix.....

Nope. Not on Netflix. Only the modern movie from 1994. Hulu has some episodes, but not Free Wheelin'.

The copy we've got somewhere was a VHS release since out of print by Cabin Fever Entertainment. It was part of a big restoration project, so it was a nice clear remaster.
Might be time to conduct some strategic torrenting. Without DVD-specific distinctives, the episodes themselves are in the public domain, so a file-by-file archive *should* be legal. I.e. if it's not a rip of a specific DVD clearly identifiable as such with menus et al, including no copyrighted additional material, whichever entity encoded the file digitally might try to rustle some jimmies but would likely lose. It's hard to copyright a specific set of bits/specific encoding of something that's in the public domain, I'm pretty sure - IANAL.

Never had any experience with torrenting. I did find the video on one YouTube site, but it's unavailable in the US. I'll check my local library. There may be DVD editions of the complete episodes. It would be worth looking at them anyway, and I might get my boys interested in them. Probably too slow for this generation, though. Not enough explosions.
